How To Avoid Holiday Weight Gain

So, the holidays are upon us and with that comes time with family, friends, and incredible food!  Did you know the average U.S. citizen gains 12 lbs during this season of taste bud bliss?  Are those 12 lbs. all lean muscle?  Absolutely, not.  Let’s take a look at some tips that have helped me keep the fat off and can help you as well.

  1. Never forget all the hard work you’ve put in with your workouts and eating plan.  If you keep this in the forefront of your mind, it will help you fend off that 2nd piece of pumpkin pie
  2. Portion control.  Keep portions to the size of your fist, 1 serving protein, 1 serving carbs, 2 servings vegetables.  Sweet potato pie is NOT a vegetable :P
  3. Stay well hydrated.  If your stomach is full of water, there’s no room for bad food.
  4. Drink a protein shake prior to hitting the holiday feast.  This will satisfy your hunger and keep eating right priority #1.
  5.  Exercise immediately after eating to get your body moving and fend off that afternoon, fat adding to your butt, nap.
  6. Stay away from too much alcohol.  Getting intoxicated will only weaken your judgement and increase the chances of going overboard with Grandma’s stuffing covered in brown gravy.

P.S. you can pick your friends, but you can’t pick your family.  Sorry mom:)

Ice Man Drops 48 lbs. in 6 weeks?

Ray CroniseSo, this is interesting. Ray Cronise, a NASA scientist, is fed up with all the “diet” B.S. after listening to an interview with Michael Phelps who stated he eats 12,000 calories a DAY! To him, the math just didn’t add up! How can a person who takes in so many calories look lean and mean like Michael Phelps does. Genetics? Maybe, but I believe ol’ Ray discovered a much easier answer..thermal load. Heck, look at his photo. A picture is worth 1,000 words, right?

I first heard of Mr. Cronise in Tim Ferris’ book, “The Four Hour Body” in which Tim talks about alternative ways to lose fat. He goes on to state that Mr. Cronise has tried all the diets and the whole caloric restriction methods, which all worked but failed over the long term, and only found thermogenics to really drop the fat fast!

Here’s a few quick tips from Ray and Tim among others:

  • You have something called Brown Adipose Tissue (BAT) on your body. This is good fat.
  • Brown Adipose Tissue helps trigger White Adipose Tissue (WAT) to burn to prevent freezing. This is also good.
  • If you target BAT and convince it you are freezing to death, it will trigger WAT to burn.
  • Placing ice on BAT for as little as 30 minutes a day will trigger that reaction.
  • Television Shows are typically 30 minutes long, making it easy to time an ice pack therapy session.
  • The largest accumulation of BAT on the human body is right at the back of your neck.

Nom, nom, nom..

That’s the sound I make when I scarf down oatmeal raisin cookies, m&ms, meat lovers pizza, french fries, and fatty cheeseburgers! Usually, I follow that sound with an “ohhh, my belly full, and I think I’m gonna…blah!!!!!” Why do we punish ourselves with these terrible foods thinking we deserve a treat? Is it because they taste so darn good? Is it because we have easy access from fatty food joints on every corner, screaming.., eat me!! Yeah, I think that’s it.

I’m tired of it. All I want is great tasting food that’s good for my body and won’t leaving me feeling sick and bloated.., and I want easy access to it. Is that too much to ask? Will someone give me an amen?

Wait, I think there is such a place.., a place “where there’s a helpful smile in every aisle.” A glorious site that’s “Hometown Proud”, and “That Sells For Less.” Did you guess it already? If not, here’s the answer: It’s your local grocery store!

The only downer is that you have to actually get out of your car, walk through the parking lot, grab a shopping cart, walk around searching for and then buying the right foods.

IDEA! I think a follow up video on what foods to buy at your local grocery store sounds cool..

Well, alrighty then. Stay tuned for my amazing grocery store video coming soon.

Why we HATE Diets!

I believe it’s because it has the word “die” embedded in it (not cool), and because we associate the word with “restriction”, which of course is NOT the American way of life. Restrict me.., what? I’ll eat/do anything I want thank you very much, I live in the great ol’ U.S. of A. where the men are men and the sheep are supersized!

We should probably rethink the whole [diet] thing and just call it [clean eating.] So instead of saying, “No, I can’t have mayo with my cold cut combo, I’m on a diet,” just say, “No, I choose not to have mayo cuz’ I’m clean eating or I’m eating clean.” The term derived from early bodybuilding circles where the guys/gals would eat clean by eating plain baked potatoes with plain chicken/beef/fish and plain vegetables..no added NOTHING..Plain! Now, “clean eating” describes more of an organic way of eating substituting hummus instead of mayo for example. You can add flavor by being creative with herbs/spices/salsas without adding the fat calories and bad cholesterols from butter, creams and cooking oils.

Example: My nemesis..Chips & Salsa. Now, the salsa is not the problem (unless you eat the whole container) it’s the fried chips that will getcha. Instead, cut up sweet potatoes into chip like pieces, bake and serve with hummus. Also, red peppers give you that crunch like a chip, but no where near the calories. Red peppers with garlic hummus..ahh, yeah!!

Can Women really do pushups?

Pushups at Good Life FitnessIs it really possible for women to do an actual pushup, and I don’t mean with the knees touching the ground..I’m talking about REAL military style pushups here? The answer is ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY, 110%, YES! I was fortunate enough to be a part of the 2011 Good Life Fitness Games and witnessed an amazing site. The MuscleFire booth had a pushup contest for men and women where the top 3 from each side would receive a free shirt or hat of their choice. What I saw next shocked me to my core. The top 3 of the men put up 105, 101, and 99 pushups, which was very impressive.., what I didn’t expect was the amount of pushups the women racked up! Of course the guys were fit dudes with arms the size of volkswagons, which one would expect, but what was so incredible were the numbers the ladies put up. You ready…, 1st place was 110, second place was 64, and third was 53!! Their arms were not huge but incredibly fit, toned, and strong. I’m guessing their average body weight was anywhere from 115-130. Do you wanna know how they did it? All three had taken bootcamp classes @ Good Life Fitness at some point and have continued their quest to live a healthier and happier life. My hats off to you ladies for putting up some serious numbers. You want to change your life, get healthy & strong, and make a whole new set of fit minded friends…go check out a class..I believe they have a free week or something. :P

Experience is everything

I can only speak from my own experiences and give you advice on fat loss products, services, tips, and techniques that I have used and seen positive results. With that said, I’ve had great success in the past & present with losing fat, gaining fat back, and then losing it again. The excuses that I hear that prevent people from getting off the couch and doing something about their health are just whiny attempts at sympathy. Statements like, “I’m just too tired at the end of the day to even think of working out”, or “I hate how healthy foods taste”, or even “Can’t I just take a pill and lose weight?”

In my experience, the more I workout the more energetic I feel. I’m sure you have felt the same way. You forced yourself to go to the gym even after an exhausting day at work because you were meeting a friend there who also helps keep you accountable. Logic says we should feel tired and exhausted after a great workout, but our bodies don’t rely on logic. This is a great example of the battlefield of the mind where the mind and body aren’t in sync. Most people will listen to what their mind is saying (I’m too tired.) Don’t be one of those people.

My suggestion is not to listen to your mind when you hear “I’m too tired” and to immediately changed into your workout clothes and hit the gym, go for a run, or do something to get your heart rate up. Our bodies can take a lot of punishment(physical activity), but our minds tell us that we are too weak, have other things to do, or just don’t want to. Being mentally tough is one of the hardest things to master.., just ask any professional athlete who puts food on the table because of their physical abilities.

Walking may add years to your life.., well, duh!

Rapid Fat Loss with WalkingWhile in NYC earlier in the week, I noticed something incredible. The majority of people I saw on the streets appeared to be in relative good shape. Now this statement is only on my observation of them, not a complete health evaluation from a board certified physician. How can this be? There must be something these people are eating or drinking or not eating or drinking, that keeps them looking fit and healthy, right? Nope, not exactly. I believe, it’s all the walking they do everyday on their way to work, shopping, and in Central Park that keeps the fat off. Now, NYC is the epitome of what we call a “concrete jungle”, and is very well known for its great restaurants and street vendors, so you know the food these people are eating tastes amazing, which means high in fats/sugars/butter/sodium..all the good stuff, right? So one can assume that even though their diet isn’t the most healthiest on the planet, their physical activity levels are so high that their bodies just burn all those calories away. So the takeaway from my experience in NYC is in order to lose fat, keep the fat off, or to help kick start your fat loss machine even with a poor diet is to just walk…walk…walk. For miles everyday…just walk. Simple enough.

Have you heard this?

So, I hear this commercial all the time and I won’t say who it’s for complete nutrition, anyway, at the end it says “If you lose more than 10 lbs in the first week, contact your local rep to adjust your dosage.” Are they serious? I don’t know whether I should applaud their brilliant marketing or call them out on that outrageous statement. I believe the commercial is for a diet pill, not for healthy eating or exercise or anything remotely healthy..they just want to sell their pills! I don’t believe in taking pills to lose weight. You wanna lose fat, change your eating and start an exercise routine.., don’t just take a pill. Of course, that is my opinion, and you can make your own decision on what you think is right for your body. I know eating right is 85% of losing fat fast while looking and feeling great because it has worked for me.

Pills are like candy, eat too many and your stomach will start to hurt or develop an ulcer.. :-P

Remember this..”Where’s the beef?”
